“My pants are up higher than Cotto's. I'm going to be the man, and Cotto will be the woman". Mayorga continued, "On March 12, Puerto Rico is going to be dressed in black for your funeral. I can see fear in your eyes. I will retire you".
Cotto countered with the following remarks.
“Mayorga’s whole career was a joke. I am a gentleman, you (Mayorga) are a joker and a clown. All your (Mayorga) career you have run off at the mouth and in all the big fights you've failed. Just so you know who I am, I am a three-time world champion.”
There seems to be a group of boxing fans who prefer this match as a one sided win for Ricardo Mayorga. With the churning animosity between these two combatants it may be warming up to be a classic.
For those of you who have yet to know who Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (29-7, with 23 KOs) is, he is a former WBA and WBC Welterweight champion and also a former WBC Junior Middleweight champion who hails from Nicaragua. He was one of the more favourite boxers in the late 1990s and early 2000s and he was also featured on the cover of Ring Magazine’s October 2003 issue. Because of his antics and colorful personality, he was once called “the craziest man in the sport”, and the only fighter that I could think of that smokes cigarettes and is not ashamed to let us know. He’s fought the best in the Welterweight and Junior Middleweight division like Fernando Vargas, Sugar Shane Mosley, Vernon Forrest, Felix Trinidad, and Oscar dela Hoya. He is a ferocious boxer that loves to fight toe-to-toe and never backs out.
Miguel “Junito” Cotto (35-2, with 28 KOs) needs no further introduction. He is considered to be Top Rank’s second most popular (and 2nd most profitable) boxer in their superstar-laden stable of boxers. He is the current Jr. Middleweight champion after beating Yuri Foreman last year but fell idle after that fight. He is also known to be a great and exciting boxer that loves to fight. With the help of legendary trainer Emmanuel Steward as his trusted second, I believe that we might see some exciting new moves from the Puerto Rican Superstar.
